Mr. Edward “Gene” Givens, 79, of Emerson passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Townsend Park Health and Rehab. Born January 7, 1934 in Marietta, he was the son of the late Lonnie David Givens and the late Ethel Tinsley Givens.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Tinsley, Grady Tinsley and Charles Givens. Gene was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Emerson. He was a quiet, humble man and a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a veteran, having served his country in the United States Army. Gene was employed by the Marietta Daily Journal for fifty-three years before retirement.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Margie Evans Givens; his daughter Deborah Laird and husband, Steve; his sons, David Givens and wife, Janet, Darrell Givens and Melody Hughey and Dwayne Givens and wife, Jennifer; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his siblings, Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Givens, Mr. Jimmy Givens, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Givens, Mrs. Martha Givens Landers, Mrs. Dot Givens Hale, Mrs. Fay Givens Hill and Mrs. Ruby Givens Cortis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 28, 2013 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Dr. Greg Potts and Greg Patterson officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be David, Darrell, Dwayne and Caleb Givens and Steve and Jason Laird. Scott Templeton, Ronnie Stover, Al Pallone, Jerry Bevil, Chad Drey, Brian Morris, Russell Brand and Allen Beringause will serve as honorary pallbearers.
