Obituary for Robert Michael Collier, Sr.

Robert Michael  Collier, Sr.
Robert Michael Collier, Sr., 61, of Cartersville, Georgia passed away at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia on Friday, June 15, 2012 surrounded by his family. Diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2010, Mr. Collier waged a valiant fight, but in the end God called him home.

Mr. Collier was born in Manchester, Georgia and was raised in Woodland, Georgia to Vivian and the late Billy Collier on January 4, 1951. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Collier.

Mr. Collier was a graduate of Manchester High School. In 1973 he graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.

During his youth, Mr. Collier was an active Boy Scout, serving as a Life Scout for his troop. He was a member of the percussion section for the Manchester High School marching band.

Throughout his life, he continued to be actively involved in the community, especially when it came to his involvement with his children. When his children were younger, he volunteered with the Bartow County Recreation Department as a soccer and baseball coach. He served his home church, Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist as a disciple leader and a teacher for the Transitions Sunday school class.

Beginning on March 25, 1985, he worked for State Farm Insurance. Throughout his 27 years in the Marietta Operations Division, he worked in the claims department, later as a supervisor, and beginning in 1998 became the Team Manager.

Bob Collier is survived by his beloved wife, Melanie Cowart Collier to whom he was married for twenty three years; son, Michael Collier; daughter, Cara Collier; mother, Vivian Allen Collier; brother, Bill Collier, and his wife, Hilda; mother-in-law, Jeanneen Cowart; and brother-in-law, Jay Cowart, his wife, Sabra; niece, Anna; nephew, Jase; nephew, Tracy Brown his wife Rosemary and their children, Mallory and Logan.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of the Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church with The Rev. Doctor Bill Burch, Rev. Nena Jones, and the Rev. Paul Battles officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Family Life Center at Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church for all family and friends. A private interment will follow Tuesday afternoon in Woodland, Georgia.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Steve Landrum, Rick Ross, Mike Fields, Matt Santini, Marcus Elzey, Rod Heard, Roy Palmer, Bill Holton, John Berry, Bill Dillard and members of the Transitions Sunday School class at Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends Monday evening at 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

In lieu of flowers those desiring may make memorial contributions should be made to Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church.
