Obituary for Ben Eugene Turner

Ben Turner was a beloved coach, a phenomenal granddaddy, devoted UGA fan, and loved all things North Cobb Warriors, and, in later years, Cartersville Canes. He was an avid church goer, leading and participating in church choir, and multiple plays and musicals to honor his beloved Savior over the years. He celebrated his children and the community as a dedicated basketball and softball coach, delighted as he saw his former athletes make varsity team levels. His greatest joys were time spent with family, cheering grandkids on at soccer fields, vacations at the beach, and walks down memory lane with the Turner brothers.

Ben was 80 years old when he passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at Cartersville Medical Center.

He was born Benny Eugene Turner, on June 17, 1940, in Atlanta, known as Ben, “Benny boy,” Daddy, Coach, and (his favorite) Granddaddy. He was the son of Elizabeth Crenshaw Turner and the late Ben Lemuel Turner. He was also preceded in death by his son, Roy G. Brown.

Ben served his country in the United States Army and was later a trainer for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. Following his retirement, he worked at Cartersville outlet for 15 years in addition to coaching and participating within his local community.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan Goodson Turner; his children, Melinda Turner Palmer (Ken), and Shannon Brown Casola (Gary); his mother, Elizabeth Crenshaw Turner; his grandchildren, Ashley Miller, Susie Palmer, Heaven Brown, and Levi Casola; 6 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Albert Turner (Brenda), Leon Turner (Gwen), and Tommy Turner (Cheryl); and 20 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Pastor Jeremy Morton officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Hill Cemetery in Acworth. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 22, 2021 at the funeral home.
