Mr. George Ervin Bew, 87 of Cartersville, GA died Wednesday, at Redmond Hospital in Rome, GA. Born on April 11, 1932 he was the son of the late Susan Ervin Bew and the late George Hyde Bew.

A St. Petersburg, FL native, Mr. Bew was a classically trained pianist; a graduate of Florida State University and Oberlin College Conservatory of music. He also accompanied and studied music and opera on his many travels to some of Europe’s finest opera houses.

Mr. Bew married Jonalyn Hill Bew in June of 1971. They came to Cartersville in the late 1980’s intending to retire, having been previously involved in the Suncoast Opera Guild in Florida, George along with his wife founded the Cartersville Opera in which he helped direct and assemble season after season. It became a tradition that was a source of great community pride. He was also a long-term member of the Sam Jones Choir in which he not only sang but composed various music pieces for.

Mr. Bew is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Tim Agan; his grandchildren, Melanie McNamara, Kaitlyn and T.J. Hemphill, Christopher Root, Joshua Root, Nicholas Root, and Maddie Agan; his great-grandchildren, Landon McNamara, Thomas George Hemphill, and Ruby Hemphill; his niece, Deborah Liu of Durham, NC; and nephews, Robert Bew of West Palm Beach, FL, and David Bew of Laguna Beach, CA.

Thank you for being my Dad and such a wonderful husband to my mother. I know my life would have surely been different without you in it and I thank God he put you there. There is a hole in my heart now only God can fill or heal. I am going to miss all our talks and laughs. I bet heaven is as great if not better than we talked about❤. I will miss you so much. Until we meet again. Your daughter Sara.

I have known George since 1947. He wrote music and played the organ at Pass-a-Grille Beach Community Church. He was a close friend and I sang in the choir when he was the Music Director. His family were great friends of my family, the Paul Bakers. He was funny, talented and very intelligent. Carter, GA will miss him. Condolences and prayers go out to his family.

I was fortunate as a young singer to meet and work with George and Jonalyn Bew in Cartersville in several opera productions. They left an indelible mark on me and my fellow colleagues with their passion and generosity, they will be missed by many.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Mr. Bew was the kindest man I ever knew. He taught me so much and because of him (and Jonalyn) I chose a career teaching music and drama. My fondest memories as a child were the years they were part of. They were my second family and I loved them so much! I see them in my mind everyday in the vocal warm-ups I instruct with my students and everything we do at my school. It’s like living those happy moments every day. I often talk about the both of them in my classes. I still see George at the Piano and Jonalyn by my side- fondly in my memories. They had such an impact on my entire life. I haven’t forgotten one word of anything you ever taught me. My only pain and regret is that I never reached out to come visit. We get so busy with life and work -never thinking about the hurt you feel for not putting things on hold for one trip. That one trip of running to them and saying how much I loved them and how thankful I am for having them in my life. I know they are in a place of endless peace and love. That’s what they always gave to everyone that knew them and that’s what is surrounding them now. I will miss you dearly! ❤️

My love for always,
