Obituary for Mary Ada Fowler Ferguson

Mrs. Mary A. Fowler Ferguson, 86, of Emerson, GA passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Redmond Regional Hospital from complications of lung disease.

Mrs. Ferguson was born in Cartersville, GA November 30, 1934, twin daughter of the late Thomas David Fowler and Lena Fay Jones Fowler. She attended Center Baptist Church and later Emerson United Methodist Church that became her home. She loved singing, playing the piano and anything about elephants.

Mary always loved learning and started each day with two newspapers, working crossword puzzles and Sudoku. Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune were never missed, and searching the web and YouTube learning more about her favorites-elephants, flowers, history and people were nightly pastimes.

She had a passion for basketball (playing for Cass High in the final four state championship in 1947). She became a loyal Coach K and Duke University men’s basketball fan. Inspired by Coach K’s skilled leadership and successful seasons she regularly was heard to say, “Go Duke!”

Her work history through the years continued her love of people, gardening and animals. Making many wonderful, lifelong friends. Retiring from her much loved position of medical office assistant with Dr. William C. Stem, Orthopaedic Surgeon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Joe of 55 years, his parents Pledger and Delia and brother James. Best friends and cousin Bob and Carolyn Sullins. Also preceded by two brothers, Ray and his wife Cecelia and Harry and his wife Doris, and brothers-in-law Earl Woody, Donald Stepp, and Herman Hardigree; preceded by two sisters, Dorothy Fowler Woody and Barbara Faye Fowler Littlefield.

Survivors include her two children, Pam, husband Howard Elrod and Joey Ferguson; her precious puppy Prissy. Grandchildren, Brandon and June Elrod, Holly Elrod and Bart Skeeters, Jennifer and Lonnie Jones, and Faith Fox. Great grandchildren Bentley, Bay, Brent, Brooke, Jace, Zoey, Zackery, Izabelle, Trinity and Micaela. Sisters LeNelle Bland, Eva Jo Stepp, her twin Martha Hardigree, and sister-in-law Ellen Perkins Ferguson; brother Robert Fowler and wife Faye, and brother-in-law Dr Jerry Littlefield and many beloved nieces and nephews.
