Obituary for Virginia Jo Williams (Caudill)
Virginia Jo Caudill Williams, formerly of Ashland, Kentucky, age 95, passed away at Daybreak Village in Kennesaw on December 27, 2020, surrounded by family. She fought a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Virginia Jo was born on April 23, 1925 in Ashland, Kentucky to Rev. Clay Beckham Caudill and Frances Parrard Caudill. Although she attended Ashland Schools, she graduated from Olive Hill High School in 1943.
Virginia Jo was called to be a teacher. She attended Ashland Junior College and during the War Years, there was a shortage of teachers. Virginia Jo was hired by the Ashland School System to teach on an emergency certificate, teaching during the school year and attending summer school during the summer. She received her BS degree in Education from Eastern Kentucky State College. She loved to tell her grandchildren that it took 7 years for her to finish her last two years of college. Virginia continued her career in the Ashland School System at Bayless, Wylie, and Oakview. Her calling was to teach first graders and she embraced it with joy. Many summers were spent with laundry baskets full of books in the trunk of the Pontiac, delivering to her students so they did not lose the skills they had gained under her tutelage.
Virginia Jo married the love of her life, Paul Anderson Williams, on January 7, 1953. To that union, they welcomed a daughter in 1955. She and Paul moved to Cartersville, GA in 1990 to be near their daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren.
While in Ashland, Virginia Jo was a member of First Baptist Church and played an active role in the Sunday School, Choir, and WMU. She also was a lifetime member of the Preceptor Gamma chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
After moving to Cartersville, Virginia Jo or Miss Virginia as she became known, united with Tabernacle Baptist Church and was active in Sunday School and WMU. She was instrumental in forming the Children's Library at Tabernacle and many children were influenced for Christ by her sweet spirit. She also volunteered her time with the Community Church Shop and enjoyed spending time ministering with the clientele.
Virginia Jo was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, a brother JD Caudill and sister-in-law Lillian R. Caudill, and a dear cousin, Dr. Claude C. Hazlett and his wife Thomissa.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Popham (Bill) of Emerson, grandson Craig Popham of Adairsville, and granddaughter Erin Raby (Phillip) of John's Creek. She is also survived by her brother Jim Andy Caudill of Ashland, Kentucky.
Services in Cartersville will be held on Thursday, December 31 at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home with visitation from 12:00 to 1:45 pm and funeral services at 2:00pm in the chapel.
Honorary pall bearers will be members of Lamar Pinson/Ray Devault Life Group.
Interment will be held in the Ashland Cemetery with visitation at Miller Funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 with graveside services to follow.
Pall bearers will be Craig Popham, Phillip Raby, Keith Smith, and the staff of the Miller Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Tabernacle Baptist Church are appreciated in Virginia' s memory.
