Our beloved mother and Gigi, Betty Whitten Mathis, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 19, 2025. She was 78.
Betty was the heart of our family. She was married for 50 years to her husband, Howard Edward (Eddie) Mathis, who preceded her in death in 2017. She raised two children, Paula (Joseph) Hilinski and Mark (Hillary) Mathis, in a loving home to be independent, strong, and thoughtful adults. As a grandmother to Caroline, Audrey, Chloe, Sophie, Bode, and Maisie she was the Gigi who never said no to babysitting, entertaining toddlers for hours, having babies in her lap, explaining how things worked, and generally spoiling them rotten every chance she had.
Betty was a tolerant soul who tried to see the best in everyone. Remembered by others as kind and strong, she gave the most levelheaded advice, was feisty, if need be, and loved to read a good romance or thriller. She lived a simple life surrounded by family, loving her children and grandchildren, and being the best wife she could be.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Whitten and Alice Whitten Darnell, and her brother John Whitten. She is survived by her sisters Linda (Billy) Martin, and Elizabeth Parmer, sister-in-law Brenda (Parker) Mathis, nephew Todd Mathis, and many other much loved and spoken about nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and friends.
A memorial gathering will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home & Cremation Services located at 430 Cassville Road, Cartersville, Georgia.
