Billy A. (John) Cowart, age 77, of Cartersville died Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at DeKalb Medical Center. A native of Bartow County, born Sept. 28, 1931; he was the son of the late Homer Cowart and Rose Long Cowart. He was a member of Atco Baptist Church and enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Union Carbide.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife of 51 years, Mary Smith Cowart; and four sisters, Margaret Pendley, Mary Lou Cansler, Betty Baynes and Nora Lee Cowart.
Survivors include one sister, Sandra Southern of Cartersville; his step-daughter, Barbara Elrod of Canton; his step-granddaughter, Jennifer Elrod of Canton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at Sunset Memory Gardens with Rev. Jimmy Blackburn officiating. Interment will follow.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services at 2:00 p.m. and will include: Robert Ed Hicks, Lloyd Buchanan, Kenneth Chitwood, Jerry Jones, Everett Cornett and Jack Worley.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 12:30 � 2:30 p.m.
