Buren Smith

Mrs. Buren Evelyn Smith, age 104, of 12 Chateau Drive SE, Rome, GA, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Smith was born in Gordon County on December 13, 1903, the daughter of the late John Wesley Smith and Mary Ella Withrow Smith. Mrs. Smith moved to Rome in 1945 from Hill City, GA. She was a member of West Rome Baptist Church where she served as secretary for WMU. Mrs. Smith worked part-time doing alterations and when she was in her eighty's worked at the snack bar at Floyd County Bowling Lanes. She developed a love for Bowling in 1965 and played twenty-four years on the Tuesday night Misfit League. Also, on the Wednesday morning league and in 1992 won the Georgia State Women's Bowling Tournament. Mrs. Smith was a great seamstress and enjoyed crotchet and gardening. Also, she had a love for fishing and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest H. Smith in 1964, to whom she was married on July 27, 1924; two sons, W. Frank Smith and Robert (Bud) Smith; a great-granddaughter, Kelly Braden; a great-great-grandson, Claude Hupp III; four brothers, William Smith, Walter Smith, Hoke Smith, and Homer Smith; and four sisters, Myrtle Smith Barrett, Annis Smith Smith, Gleavea Smith Sparks, and Lettie Smith Kinnett.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Maureen "Polly" Herrmann Jackson and Joseph Walter "J.W." Jackson of Cartersville, GA; two daughters-in-law, Wanda King Smith of Calhoun, GA and Lily Mici Smith of Sugar Valley, GA; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2008, at 2:30 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. George Benham and times remembered with J.W. Jackson. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith will remain in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M.

The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers and are requested to meet in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home on Saturday by 2:00 P.M.: grandsons, Phil Smith, Chris Smith, Mike Smith, Richard Braden, David Braden, and a great-grandson, Tucker Smith.
