Mr. Carl Leon Holtzclaw, age 72, of 374 Bryant Road SW, Rome, GA, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, in his residence following an extended illness.Mr. Holtzclaw was born on March 27, 1934 in Polk County, GA, to the late Charles Leon Holtzclaw and Mary Brand Holtzclaw. He grew up on his grandparents' farm working with the animals and the fields. From the beginning Mr. Holtzclaw was a cowboy and owned his first horse at a young age. Like most people he went through a time growing up trying to find his way and in 1982 his life changed. Mr. Holtzclaw turned his life over to God, and in return God sent him a wife, Myra Tanner. He was a member of the West Rome Church of God, and he and his wife attended until he was unable. Prior to retirement in 1991, he was associated with his paint business, A1 Painting. Mr. Holtzclaw enjoyed working outside, his horses, and his family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Holtzclaw, a brother, Fred Holtzclaw, and a sister, Bessie Holtzclaw.Mr. Holtzclaw is survived by his wife, Myra Tanner Holtzclaw of Rome, to whom he married August 19, 1972, two step-sons, Tony Nichols and Michael Barton both of Centre, AL; a step-daughter, Betty Carline Cater of Jasper, AL; three sons, Scott Holtzclaw and Daniel Holtzclaw both of Yakima, WA, and Douglas Holtzclaw of British Columbia, Canada; two daughters, Carla Ketola of Grangeville, ID, and Kathy Holtzclaw of Yakima; 11 step-grandchildren; 12 grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle House of Achworth, GA, and Mary Dentmon of Cedartown, GA; and four brothers, Charles Holtzclaw of Rome, Jesse Holtzclaw and Roger Holtzclaw both of Cedartown, and Frank Holtzclaw of Rome, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at 2 PM in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Oley Wilson officiating and his son, Tony Nichols, giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in the North View Cemetery in Cedartown, GA.The family will receive friends this (Tuesday) evening from 6 until 8 PM in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home. At other hours the family will receive at the home that he shared with his wife.The gentlemen serving as active pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 PM on Wednesday and include: Steve Bordner, D.J. Tanner, Michael Barton, Michael Barton, Jr., Danny Shirley, and Danny Paul Holtzclaw. The Honorary pallbearers will be B.J.
