Cecil "Ray" Southern

Mr. Cecil Ray Southern, age 67, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his family, following a long courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Bartow County, Ray was born June 28, 1945, the son of the late Garnett Cecil Southern and the late Doris Patterson Southern Mercer. Ray was an active member and deacon of Atco Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. He retired from the City of Cartersville where he made many lifelong friends and touched many lives. In addition to his parents, Ray is preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Bertie Patterson and Allen and Martha Martin.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years and best friend, Sandra Cowart Southern; his son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Hanna Southern; his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Kenny Lowery; his grandchildren, Lauren Lowery, Lindsey and Tyler Ellis, Levi and Luke Southern, Maddison Ward and Brooklyn Shepherd; his step-father George Mercer; his brothers, Glenn and Sam Southern, Steve and Deborah Southern, Jeff and Anne Southern, step-brother, Lanny Mercer and step-sister, Norma Bohannon along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Atco Baptist Church with Reverend Doug Harris and Reverend Johnny Womack officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The family received friends on Wednesday, October 24, 20l2 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Womack, Glenn Worley, Jerry Milam, Harry Green, Randy Cochran and Donald Peace.
