Mr. Charles "JayBird" Howard Chastain, age 92, of Sugar Valley Road, Cartersville, passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at a local hospital.
Mr. Chastain was born in Ellijay, Georgia on September 4, 1928, son of the late Clay and Mae Chastain. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Everett Chastain, by his two sisters, Lola Bell Chastain and Evelyn Edmondson, son-in-law, Robert "Bob" Whitfield, and great granddaughter, Dasey Maddox.
Mr. Chastain was a 1947 graduate of Cass High School and retired after working 40+ years at Goodyear Tire. Mr. Chastain was a member of Atco Baptist Church throughout his life. Mr. Chastain read the newspaper every morning, loved being outside, especially to fish and hunt, and enjoyed watching sports. His greatest joy in life was taking care of his family, especially his wife and best friend of almost 74 years, Betty Jo Chastain, to whom he was married on May 1, 1947.
Other survivors include his daughter, Linda Whitfield, Rome; two grandsons, Robert Whitfield (Kerri), Rome, and Jason Whitfield (Christina), Florida; a granddaughter, Lindsey Maddox (Matthew), Rome; five great grandsons, Judson, Bobby, Dawson, Dylan, and Dakota Whitfield; two great granddaughters, Molley Maddox and Lillie Chapman; two nephews and four nieces.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 2, 2021, at 2pm in the Chapel at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home with Senior Pastor Justin Holcomb and Rev. Eddie Manning officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home on Friday from noon until 1:30. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Atco Baptist Church, 20 Parmenter Street, Cartersville, GA 30120.
