Charles Padgett

Mr. Charles Padgett, age 83, of 86 Burton Road, Rome, GA, passed on to glory on December 30, 2005, in a local hospital after an extended illness.Mr. Padgett was born in Pickens County and was the son of the late Henry Sylvester Padgett and Martha Jane Hopson Padgett. He is survived by Inez Busby Padgett to whom was married for 59 years. Mr. Padgett was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Padgett on December 13, 2005. Also, proceeded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He was the beloved uncle of a number of nieces and nephews as well as a large extended family.Mr. Padgett served in the European theatre in World War II in the Army Air Corps with service in North Africa, Sicily, and Germany. He played baseball as a shortstop in the Dodgers minor league farm system. After the war Mr. Padgett was active in local Textile League baseball, playing for Tubize, Shannon, Lindale and Anchor Rome teams. An avid golfer all his life, he played regularly at Horseleg Creek Country Club and had many cherished friends who he enjoyed playing with.Mr. Padgett was a dedicated worker with the U.S. Postal Service and walked and carried the mail on Broad Street as his regular route for many years. He retired in 1985 after thirty-one years of service. Mr. Padgett worshiped and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.Funeral services for Mr. Padgett will be held Monday, January 2, 2006, at 1:00 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Stockton officiating and Mr. Branch Bragg and Mr. Aubra Davis giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery.Mr. Padgett will remain in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Monday from 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour. The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as active pallbearers and are requested to meet in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home by 12:30 P.M.: Tim Galloway, Chris Padgett, Scott Padgett, Bobby Cowart, Johnny Cowart, Alfred Baker, and Tony Fowler.
