Mr. Clyde E. "Dixie" Howell, age 85, of 108 John Ross Drive, Rome, GA, died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at his residence.
A native of Rome and Floyd County, Mr. Howell was born on September 11, 1921, the son of the late Ed C. and Lena Slaton Howell. He had been a member of the West Rome Baptist Church since 1949 and a past member of the Board of Directors of the Rome Boys Club. Mr. Howell was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served during World War II in the South Pacific. He was present on the USS Missouri at the surrender of the Japanese. Mr. Howell was a member of the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion and a member of the V.F.W. Post 4911. Prior to retirement in 1986, he had been associated with Georgia Power for over 43 years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Howell was preceded in death by a brother, John E. Howell, and five sisters, Lillian McCord, Margaret Watkins, Beatrice Wade, Evelyn Walters and Virginia Everett.
Mr. Howell is survived by his wife, Imogene McCullough Howell, to whom he was married on April 20, 1940; four daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Harold Brown of Ringgold, GA, Cindy and Tony Brown of Calhoun, GA, Jane Ensley and Dale Howell, both of Rome. Nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Howell will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Oates officiating. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home. At other hours they may be contacted at the residence.
The "Jake" Puryear Detachment #1020 of the United States Marine Corps League will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include Sam "Red" Byrd, Josh Scoggins, Bill Monday, James Broom and William Morgan.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Open Door Childrens Home, 792 John Davenport Dr. NW, Rome, GA, 30165.
