Colbert Wheat

Mr. Colbert Wheat, age 87, of Rome, GA, died Monday, December 29, 2008, at his residence.



Mr. Wheat was born in Whitfield County, GA, on April 21, 1921, the son of the late Jessie Anderson Wheat and Ethel Saylors Wheat. He retired from Burlington and worked over thirty years of service with Minge Concrete. Mr. Wheat was a member of Dykes Creek Baptist Church. He loved whittling, building, fishing, gardening, cars, making walking sticks, and putting his rabbit boxes out. Also, he had a special love for his dog, �Biscuit.� In addition to his parents Mr. Wheat was preceded in death by his step-mother, Mertice Wheat and numerous brothers and sisters.



Mr. Wheat is survived by his wife, Mildred Martin Wheat to whom he was married on July 25, 1942; five sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Melvin Wheat of Rome, Larry Colbert and Dottie Wheat of Rome, Donnie and Rita Wheat of Rome, Jerry and Carolyn Wheat of Rome, and Ray Thomas and Sharon Wheat of Silver Creek, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Ann and Perry Wallace of Rome; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two half brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Lou Wheat of Dalton, GA and Jesse James and Betty Wheat of Resaca, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.



Funeral services will be held Friday, January 2, 2009, at 2:30 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Mikel Garrett, Rev. Billy Starks, and Rev. Brad Prater officiating. Interment will follow in the Floyd Memory Gardens.



The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 31, 2008, from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home.



The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as active pallbearers and are requested to meet in the Heritage Chapel on Friday by 2:00 P.M.: Grandsons, Mel Wheat, Chuck Wheat, Chip Wheat, Kevin Wheat, Shane Wheat, Chad Wheat, Johnny Ray Wheat, Matt Wheat, and Eddie Coulter. Honorary pallbearer will be Billy Ray Coulter.
