Donald Hugh Pruitt of Cartersville, Georgia passed away at his residence on November 2, 2021, following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Don is survived by his wife of 35 years, Shelia Ann Pruitt (Barrett); sister, Louise Johnson of South Carolina; sons, Tommy Vollmer of North Carolina, James Pruitt of Atlanta, Ga., and Gary Pruitt of Cartersville, Ga.; daughters, Rhonda Kavel of North Carolina, and Angela Sosebee of Sautee, Ga.
Don is preceded in death by his parents Fred Eldon Pruitt and Cora Pruitt of Cumming, Ga.; brothers, Fred and Gene Pruitt; sisters, Mary Catherine Pruitt, Betty Sue Pilcher, and Polly Buice. Don is also preceded in death by his son, Brian Donn Pruitt. Don served his country in the United States Army for over 22 years, from 1958 until his retirement in 1980. Following Don's retirement from the U.S. Army, Don graduated from the Georgia Police Academy in 1981 and began a career in civilian security-related positions, such as working in the security division at Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Ga. After Don retired from Lockheed Martin, he served as Security Director for several Atlanta hotel groups.
Don was an exceptional high-school athlete who excelled at sports such as football, shotput, and track. During his time in basic training, he even outran the so-called fastest man in Texas. On April 20, 1986, Don was a league bowler who amazingly bowled 11 strikes in a row at the Marietta Lanes bowling alley, earning a final score of 279. Don loved the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Braves, and the Atlanta Falcons. He always ensured that he never missed a game. Don is deeply loved by his family and many friends he made throughout the years, and we will never forget him.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2021 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home with Reverend Joe Ringwalt officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2021 at the funeral home.
