Mrs. Emma "Gertrude" Murphy Hampton, age 88, of 107 A Yother Lane, Chattanooga, TN, formerly of Rome, GA, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in a Chattanooga nursing home.
Mrs. Hampton was born in Whitfield County, GA, on June 27, 1919, the daughter of the late Jeptha Washington and Marie Pierce Murphy. She retired from Pepperell Manufacturer after fifty-four years of service. Mrs. Hampton was the oldest living member of Hill Crest Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Mrs. Hampton loved being with her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hampton is preceded in death by her husband, James Dewight Hampton; a grandson, Christopher Lee Hampton; two sisters, Mattie Lou Adams and Margaret Caldwell; and two brothers, Grady Murphy and William Murphy.
Mrs. Hampton is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Donna Hampton of Chattanooga, TN; a grandson, Shane Hampton of Shannon, GA; four brothers, Allen Murphy and his wife, Carol, Harris Murphy and his wife, Beatrice, Arthur Murphy, and Clarence Murphy and his wife, Lynette; and three sisters, Martha Clemons and her husband, Jerry of Centre, AL, Frances Brooks and her husband, Davis of Armuchee, GA, and Gracie Hovers of Rome. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at 2:00 P.M. in the Hill Crest Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Hearne and J. Parnick Jennings, Sr. officiating. Mrs. Hampton will lie-in-state in the church from 1:00 P.M. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery.
Mrs. Hampton will remain in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home.
