Mr. Ernest Newell Sargent, 94, of Marietta passed away peacefully July 7, 2011 at his home at the Fite House in Cartersville. Born in Marietta, GA on September 17, 1916, he was the son of the late Walter Ephram Sargent and the late Estelle McManus Sargent. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Sargent.
Mr. Sargent leaves behind former spouse, Mattie Lou Wood Sargent; two stepsons; Maxie Clayton, of Tellico Plains, NC and Tommy Clayton, of Pigeon Forge, TN; five children; twins Judy Sargent and Janet Clackum, son, Cary Sargent, daughter, Sharon Hugill and son, John Sargent; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Mr. Sargent served his country for nine years, in the Air Force and the Army. He served in WWII as a member of the Army�s first paratrooper division, 82nd Airborne, 505th PIR, Company D, H Minus. He participated in four regimental airborne assaults and 6 months as a POW. He received a degree in Engineering from ICS and retired from the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a long time member of the Church at Liberty Square.
The family will receive visitors at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home, 430 Cassville Rd. Cartersville, GA 30120 on Sunday, July 10, 2011 from 5:00pm � 7:00pm. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home (770-382-0034) with Dr. Joe Edwards officiating at 11:00 am. A military interment will follow at Georgia National Cemetery, Highway 20, at 12:30.
Serving as pallbearers are grandsons; Ray Clackum, Jr., Eric Ferguson, Oren Wilhelm Ferguson, II, Jonathan Newell Sargent, Alex Sewell and Victor Sewell.
