Evelyn Chandler Strickland, 89, of Alexander City, Alabama and formerly of Nashville, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Monday, January 4, 2010 at the Chapmans Nursing Home in Alexander City. Born January 31, 1920 in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Nellie Collins Chandler and the late Roscoe Draden Chandler Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Strickland; her daughter, Louisa E. Strickland; her sister, Nelladeane C. Burnette; and her brother, R. D. Chandler Jr.
Evelyn graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1937 where she was the valedictorian. She attended the Alabama Girls� Technical Institute and College for Women (Montevallo) in 1941 and majored in home economics.
Evelyn worked as a secretary but became a full time homemaker after the birth of her daughter. She lived with her family in Nashville, Tennessee for the majority of her life where she was an active member of the Donelson Presbyterian Church, the Stone River Women�s Club, and several bridge clubs.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Roberta H. Strickland of Florida and Mrs. Betty Lou Chandler of Tennessee; her nieces, Mrs. Christine S. Moon of Georgia and Mrs. Beverly B. Howard of Alabama; her nephews, Commander Edward Strickland IV (U.S. Navy - retired) of Florida, Captain Peter B. Strickland (U.S. Navy - retired) of Virginia, and Mr. Clifford Strickland of Florida; her great-nieces, Annette S. VanHorn, Sheryl Lehman, and Rebecca Howard; and her great nephews, Steven Moon and Robert Chandler Howard.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 � 12:45 p.m. Monday at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Donelson Presbyterian Church, 2305 Lebanon Road, Nashville, Tennessee 37214.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Benham Family Cemetery in Cartersville, Georgia.
