Mr. Fred K. Greene, 97, one of the "Greatest Generation", passed away on his birthday, Monday, December 31, 2012. He was born December 31, 1915 in Gordon County, Georgia, the son of the late E. L. and Bunia Thompson Greene.
Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Sybil Edwards Greene to whom he was married on August 1936; brothers, Harold Greene, Blanton Greene, sister Mrs. J.L. (Jimmie) Davis, son-in-law, Henry Stephen Taff, Sr., son, Larry Edward Greene, Sr., granddaughter Deborah Sybil Greene, and grandson, Jerry Kenneth Greene, Jr.
He is survived by his children Jerry Kenneth and Mary Evelyn Lowry Greene, Sr., Cartersville, Marla Greene McDonald, Rockmart, and Vista K. Greene Taff, Cartersville, a sister, Pauline Tanner of Marietta, eight grandchildren; Evelyn Greene, Angela Greene, Larry Edward Greene, Jr., Jason Greene, Amanda Greene, Jodi Taff, Henry Stephen Taff, Jr. and Chase McDonald. Nineteen great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Greene served his country with pride during the World War II Conflict. He was sent to the European Theater in July, 1944 as a mortar gunner where he received the Purple Heart Medal for injuries received in combat while in the battle in Germany. He also holds the Combat Infantry Badge Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African-Middle Eastern Services Medal, and the American Campaign Medal while fighting in the war in northern France.
Mr. Greene retired from the State of Georgia as Senior Auditor with the Revenue Department after 28 years of service. He was happiest when he was traveling out West in his motorhome, with his family on the Blue Ridge Parkway, camping near a creek side, or rocking and reading in his chair at home.
Visitation will be held at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 from 5 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church where he was the oldest male member. The Reverend Larry Hibberts and The Reverend Brent Tatum will be officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Harold Buffington, Johnny Forsyth, Ladell Mealor, Donnie Reece, DeWayne Everett and Kenny McDaniel.
