George Bew

Mr. George Ervin Bew, 87 of Cartersville, GA died Wednesday, at Redmond Hospital in Rome, GA. Born on April 11, 1932 he was the son of the late Susan Ervin Bew and the late George Hyde Bew.

A St. Petersburg, FL native, Mr. Bew was a classically trained pianist; a graduate of Florida State University and Oberlin College Conservatory of music. He also accompanied and studied music and opera on his many travels to some of Europe's finest opera houses.

Mr. Bew married Jonalyn Hill Bew in June of 1971. They came to Cartersville in the late 1980's intending to retire, having been previously involved in the Suncoast Opera Guild in Florida, George along with his wife founded the Cartersville Opera in which he helped direct and assemble season after season. It became a tradition that was a source of great community pride. He was also a long-term member of the Sam Jones Choir in which he not only sang but composed various music pieces for.

Mr. Bew is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Tim Agan; his grandchildren, Melanie McNamara, Kaitlyn and T.J. Hemphill, Christopher Root, Joshua Root, Nicholas Root, and Maddie Agan; his great-grandchildren, Landon McNamara, Thomas George Hemphill, and Ruby Hemphill; his niece, Deborah Liu of Durham, NC; and nephews, Robert Bew of West Palm Beach, FL, and David Bew of Laguna Beach, CA.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 in the sanctuary of Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverend Kevin Lobello officiating.
