Mr. George W. Evans III, 84, of Anniston, Alabama, formerly of Cartersville, died Saturday, June 7, 2014 at North East Alabama Regional Medical Center. Born in Cartersville on March 31, 1930, he was the son of the late Georgia Washington Evans II and Lillian Crowe Evans Chapman.
George retired from The Anniston Star as editor and was former managing editor of The Daily Tribune News here in Cartersville from 1955-1959. Although a life-long Baptist, he had joined Liberty Hill Congregational Methodist Church. George was a gentle spirited man whom everyone loved. He loved his grandchildren, enjoyed reading, photography, collecting stamps and putting puzzles together. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Knight Evans; his son, Ronnie Evans and his brother, Avery Chapman.
Survivors include his sons, George W. "Sonny" Evans lV (Cindie) of Lynn Haven, Florida and Tim C. Evans (Kathy) of Anniston, Alabama; his grandchildren, Lauren Evans of Atlanta, Jordan Evans of Oxford, Alabama and Kelsey Butler of Huntsville, Alabama; his brother, Ronald W. Evans and brother, William Chapman; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2014 in the chapel of the Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with The Reverend Wayne Knight officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 5 – 7 p.m. at K & L Brown Memory Chapel in Anniston, Alabama. The family will receive friends here from 1- 2 p.m. on Friday at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home.
