Harold Duke

August 20, 1923 — June 29, 2009

Mr. Harold Lumpkin Duke, age 85, of Rome, GA died Monday, June 29, 2009, at his residence.



Mr. Duke was born in Floyd County, GA on August 20, 1923, the son of the late Wilson Lumpkin Duke and Melinda Dabbs Duke. He retired from Rome Fire Department after thirty-three years of service. Mr. Duke was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War serving in the United States Army and then with United States Marines. In addition to his parents Mr. Duke was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Baldwin Duke; two sisters, Lucy Axley and Eliza Price; and three brothers, Robert Duke, W.L. �Cotton� Duke, and James Duke.



Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Trudy Duke and Marlin and Susan Duke; three grandchildren, Jenni Duke, Joe and Jonna Duke, and Cierra Duke; and three great-grandchildren, Duke Blackburn, Sara Duke, and Josi Blackburn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.



Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Prater officiating. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery with the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.



The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home.



The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as active pallbearers and are requested to meet in the Oaknoll Chapel by 10:30 A.M.: Joe Duke, Jerry Duke, Charles Duke, Bud Duke, David Axley, and Gene Duke. The honorary pallbearers will be retired Fire Chief Bobby McKenzie and Rome Fire Department current and retired employees.
