Mr. Hugh E. Atkins, age 59, of 186 Lynn Drive, Rome, GA, died Tuesday morning, August 31, 2004, at his residence.A native of Rome and Floyd County, Mr. Atkins was born on November 10, 1944, the son of Jamie Stinson Atkins and the late Glenn W. Atkins. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in Vietnam and in Korea. Mr. Atkins was the Director of the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency and the Rome/Floyd Emergency 911. He was a member of the Georgia Emergency Management Association, the Floyd Springs Masonic Lodge # 167 F&AM and the Noon Optimist Club. Recently Mr. Atkins was appointed to the Peace Officer's Standards and Training Council by Governor Sonny Perdue. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, as well as a caring son. Mr. Atkins spent his life serving the people of Rome and Floyd County. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Roy Atkins.Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife, Betty Townsell Atkins, to whom he was married on October 17, 1964; one daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Kyle Parker of Rome; two grandchildren, Kylie Marie Parker and Kameron Kyle Parker; mother, Jamie Atkins of Rome; two brothers, Ralph Atkins and Raymond Atkins, both of Rome. Several nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services for Mr. Atkins will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the New Armuchee Baptist Church with Mr. Tracy Hardy, Mr. Bill Thrasher, and Mr. Randy Lacey officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. On Thursday Mr. Atkins will be carried to the church to lie in-state from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour.Mr. Atkins will lie in-state at the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends this (Wednesday) evening from 6 until 9 p.m. At other hours they will be at the residence.Nephews will serve as pallbearers and are asked to meet at the church on Thursday by 1:30 p.m. and include Troy Atkins, Glenn Atkins, Jeff Atkins, Robert Atkins, Roy Atkins, Jr., and Brian Atkins.
