Mr. Hugh D. Roper, age 74, of 3193 Floyd Springs Road, Armuchee, GA, died Sunday, September 10, 2006, in a local hospital. Mr. Roper was born in Cobb County, GA, on June 16, 1932, the son of the late Grover Cleveland Roper, Jr., and Rosa Blackwell Roper. Prior to retirement in 1989 he was associated with Pepisco for a number of years. Prior to moving to Floyd County, Mr. Roper was a member and deacon of the Fair Oaks Baptist Church in Marietta, GA. At the time of his death he was a member of the Floyd Spring Baptist Church. While his boys were young, he participated in their lives by serving as assistant scout master of their Boy Scout Troup. Mr. Roper enjoyed boating and fishing, and working his farm. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Mitchell, and a brother, Joe Roper.Mr. Roper is survived by his wife, Annie Lou Westbrook Roper, to whom he was married on December 23, 1950; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Ann and Terry Barnes of Tallapoosa, GA; three sons and their friends, Benjamin "Benny" Roper of Armuchee, David Eugene Roper and Sherrie Harris of Ranger, GA, and Hugh Anthony "Tony" Roper and Gwen Sinns of LaGrange, GA; seven grandchildren, Chip Barnes, Kate Gardner, Johnny Ivey, Jason Ivey, Joe Roper, Allen Roper and Heidi Sanders; one sister, Elvie Ratta of Grand Isle, VT; one brother, Charles Roper of Clarksville, GA. Ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services for Mr. Roper will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Floyd Springs Baptist Church with Rev. George Adams and Rev. Dan Hyde officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Roper will be carried to the church to lie in-state from 12:30 p.m. until the funeral hour.The family will receive friends this (Tuesday) evening from 6 until 9 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home.Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church on Wednesday by 1:30 p.m. and include Allen Roper, Chip Barnes, Wayne Sanders, Kevin Gardner, Joey Roper, Chuck Roper and Joe Roper.Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1101 Northchase Pkwy, Marietta, GA, 30067.
