James Broom

February 15, 1935 — December 23, 2010

Mr. James Austin Broom, age 75, of Rome, GA, died Thursday, December 23, 2010, in a local hospital.



Mr. Broom was born in Hamilton County, TN, on February 15, 1935, the son of the late Thomas J. Broom and Effie L. Massey Broom. He served in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. Mr. Broom was a member of Coosa Masonic Lodge #66 F & AM, member of the Rome Shrine Club Red Devil Unit, and a member of the Yarrab Shrine Temple. He retired in 1990 as a general manager and part owner of the Rome Fruit and Produce. Mr. Broom was a member of Wesley Chapel Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Broom was preceded in death by a son, James Broom, Jr. and four brothers, Alvin E. Broom, Kyle F. Broom, Robert C. Broom, and Ronnie C. Broom.



Survivors include his devoted wife of fifty-seven years, Annette Owens Broom of Rome; two sons and daughter-in-law, David and Lori Broom of Cave Spring and Mark and Neci Broom of Rome; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Larry Perkins of Armuchee; and grandchildren, Jennifer and Robert Davis of Kennesaw, Tommy and Joanna Perkins of Armuchee, Joshua Broom of Rome, Katy Broom of Savannah, Harmony and Chris Shiflett of Rome, Jordan Broom of Cave Spring, Jeffrey Musselwhite of Cherry Point, NC, and Kyle Musselwhite of Cave Spring; great-grandchildren, Brandon Perkins, Bruce Shiflett and Bryce Shiflett. Several nieces and nephews also survive.



A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, December 27, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel with Rev. Max Carver officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion conducting military graveside rites.



The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel.



The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as active pallbearers and are requested to meet in the Oaknoll Chapel by 1:30 P.M. on Monday: Tommy Perkins, Joshua Broom, Chris Shiflett, Jimmy Trotter, Jeffrey Musselwhite, and Charlie Youngblood. The honorary pallbearers will be Billy Baker, Doug Strickland, and Randolph Oswalt.
