James Alton Gilstrap Jr., age 86, from Cartersville, GA, died peacefully while at Heritage House Palliative Care on Saturday, October 28, 2023. He was well loved by all that ever met him. He had many nicknames that he would answer to including; Goose Eye, Mr. G, Toonie, Papa Toonie, Little Hoss, and even Wyatt Earp (or was it Billy the Kid).
He was born on April 20, 1937, to the late James Gilstrap Sr. and Virginia Alred, in their house on Johnson St., in Cartersville, GA. He is also predeceased by his son Matthew Gilstrap, as well as siblings Janie, Robert, and Sherry.
He leaves his Wife of 40 years Martha Gilstrap; his children James (wife Ive), Donna (Ronnie), Dana (Tim); his grandchildren James, Josh, Emily, Chris, Evelyn, Nathan, Scott, Levi and Sarah; as well as quite a few Great Grands.
Most of us knew him as the Master plumber of plumbers due to his knowledge gained from over half a century of experience in the field. This included pipe fitter in the Navy, journeyman plumber in Texas and Georgia. He was a Master Plumber for the state and became a Cobb County inspector of plumbing/HVAC. He ended his career as the preferred plumbing expert at the Cartersville Lowes for 10+ years. Many do not know that his true calling should have been writing. He has left many poems and short stories for us to go through, all of which are written as a reflection of his life both good and bad. Truthfully the way that he could recite from memory the lyrics to so many songs that he was a real "poet".
