Mr. James Rayford Mathis, 81, of Cartersville, died Friday, February 13, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Cartersville, Georgia on December 7, 1933 and was the son of the late R. L. Mathis and the late Martha Ada Newberry Mathis.
Mr. Mathis is of the Christian Faith and was a very kind and private person. He loved his family deeply and took very good care of them. He was considered the best "Papa" in the world by his grandchildren. His close friends were few but were friends for life. Mr. Mathis operated his own body shop for many years and truly loved his work.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joan Wright Mathis; daughters, Tammy Mathis Smith and her husband, Michael of Quincy, Florida, Cathy O'Shea of Cartersville, Georgia; son, Jimmy Ray Mathis of Pensville, New Jersey; grandchildren, Ben Smith and his wife, Erica, Jennifer Smith, Connor O'Shea, Chase Mathis; sister, Kathryn Stone of Cartersville, Georgia; brothers, Gene Mathis of Semi Valley, California; Harold Mathis and his wife, Eva of Ware Shoals, South Carolina; several nieces and nephews; special cousin, Wayne Hale; and his pal "Bob" the cat.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 16, 2015 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with The Reverend Chris Blackwell officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
