Mr. James R. Nelson, age 81 of Rome, Georgia died Thursday, December 24, 2009.
Mr. Nelson was born in Calhoun, GA on November 23, 1928. He was the son of the late Amos Nelson and Dessie Harmon. He served in the United States Army for 6 years and fought in the Korean War. He retired from Atlanta-Gas Light after 36 years were he was an Office Supervisor. He and his wife, Mrs. Frances White were members at Garden Lakes Baptist Church and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing, gardening, cutting grass, and watching the Braves play baseball. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Nelson.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-six years, Frances White: his son, James R. Nelson and his spouse, Joy Nelson of Dallas, GA; grandchildren, Ricky Nelson of Rome, GA and Ashley Parvin of Dallas GA.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Hoyt Coker, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial with the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends Sunday, December 27, 2009 from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home.
The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers and are requested to meet in Oaknoll Chapel on Sunday by 2:30 P.M.: Sandy Atkins, Raymond Page, Richy Nelson, Chaney Clements, Hoyt Coker, Jr., and Ryan Coker.
