James Gunter, Sr.

November 24, 1926 — June 27, 2009

Mr. James Elbert Gunter Sr. (Jim) age 82, 115 Plymouth Road died Saturday, June 27, 2009. at his residence.



Mr. Gunter was born in Birmingham Al. on November 24, 1926, the son of the late Walter Elbert Gunter and Callie Silvernail Gunter. Mr. Gunter served his country in the US Navy during World War II. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church for 36 years. Mr. Gunter was married to his second wife Margie Tate Gunter on March 10, 1990. He was employed at G. E. for 33 years before retiring in 1988. He loved Braves Baseball, fishing, hunting and panning for gemstones, but most of all Mr. Gunter loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents Mr. Gunter was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jean Snead Gunter on May 23, 1988; one daughter Barbara Marie Gunter; a sister, Betty Gunter Johnson.



Survivors include his wife Margie Tate Gunter of Rome; one son and daughter-in-law James E. Gunter Jr. and his wife Cathie of Clarkesville, Ga. two daughters and son-in-law, Deborah Ruth Cook and her husband Hardy of Toccoa, Ga. and Mary Alice Gunter of Rome,; one brother Claude Gunter of Rome; three step children Martha and her husband Jack Benton,, William E and his wife Cathy Henry, and Janice and her husband Mark Barham all of Rome one grandson and his wife Grant and Alice Gunter of Cornelia,, Ga. 7 -step grandchildren, and 4- step great grandchildren,



Graveside services will be held Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Rev. Hoyt Coker officiating with the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.



The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home.
