Jesse James Abernathy, 88 of Taylorsville, Georgia, was welcomed home on April 5, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 21, 1935 in Kingston, Georgia, to the late Bart Abernathy and the late Lesie Hubbard Abernathy. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Martha G. Abernathy; his daughter, Terri Abernathy; and his siblings, Arthur "Bill" Abernathy, Donald Abernathy, Mary Kate Dover, and Eunice Johnson.
Jesse was a member of Bethel Crossroads Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors. Growing up, he could often be found fishing the Etowah River. He loved to hunt and fish; bird hunting was his favorite. He enjoyed antiques, collecting antique bottles, and antique shopping with his best friends John and Bobby Jo Redd. He could most often be found cheering on his Atlanta Braves and spending time with his grandbabies.
Survivors include his son, Jamie (Lisa) Abernathy; his bonus daughter, Yvonne Mullis; grandchildren, Tia Abernathy, Taylor Abernathy, TJ Parson, and Austen Parson; great grandchildren Kyli, Skyler, Aubree, Olivia, Axell, and Sawyer; nephew Don Johnson; niece, Shirley Kennedy; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, April 12, 2024 at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Bethel Crossroads Baptist Church with Van Chappell officiating. He will lie in state from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be John Redd Jr., Lamar Weldon, Frank Jolly, Jonathan Burls, Austen Parson, and TJ Parson.
