Jimmy Ray “Papa” “Shakey” Green, age 93, of Waverly, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026. He was born on July 17, 1932, in Nashville to William Charles and Hattie (Palk) Green. Jimmy lived a long and meaningful life defined by service, hard work, and a deep love for his family.
Jimmy graduated from Cohn High School in Nashville with the class of 1950, and proudly served in the United States Air Force. After receiving an honorable discharge, he began a distinguished career with Lockheed as a Flight Test Electrician, where he worked for 33 years. While still employed at Lockheed, he also founded Etowah Lighting Center in Cartersville, Georgia, building it into a successful business and a place where he formed many lifelong friendships and connections within the community.
Throughout his life, Jimmy was known for his dedication, integrity, and steady, even-tempered nature—earning him the nickname “Shakey” during his time at Lockheed because he never got upset or angry, no matter the situation.
Outside of work, he enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, and farming, and took special pride in being a keeper of doves. His farm in Tennessee was especially dear to him, and he never missed an opportunity to share stories about it. Whether out on the water or simply enjoying time together, he was a cherished fishing buddy to many. If the shellcracker were biting, the day often ended with a fish fry shared with family and friends—and you’d best not hand him a three-prong fork; Papa always insisted on four.
Known affectionately as “Papa,” Jimmy was a natural storyteller who loved to make people laugh. His warmth and humor were matched by a strong belief in hard work and doing things right—values he instilled in his family and that will carry on for generations.
He is survived by his children, Mindy (Mark) Arnold, Mike (Lisa) Green, and Terri (Goran) Dragoslavic; his cherished grandchildren, Dana (Chaney) Bryant, Paula (Jose) Lizcano, Mara (David) Dorsett, Kaylee (Emily) Willingham, Gini Dragoslavic, and Max Dragoslavic; and several beloved great-grandchildren, Hayden, Reed, Madison, Natalie, Artie, and Lainie; as well as his sister, Betty Sue Dennis.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Downer Green; his wife, Jane Green; and his siblings, Charlie Green, Danny Green, Joe Green, and Carolyn (Donald) Fielder.
He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and deep family bonds. Papa will be remembered for his steady presence and the joy he brought to those around him.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Jimmy’s memory by spending time with loved ones, sharing a story, or enjoying the outdoors—just as he loved to do.
