John Grant

February 23, 1919 — September 11, 2004

Mr. John Richmond ( J.R.) Grant , age 85, of 204 Robinhood Rd. Rome, GA, died Saturday, September 11, 2004 at a local hospital following an extended illness.Mr. Grant was born in Floyd County, February 23, 1919, son of the late Jim and Maggie Johnson Grant and had spent the greater part of his life in Rome and Floyd County. He was of the Baptist Faith and prior to retirement, for over 50 years he was a member of local # 72, Atlanta Plumbers, steamfitters, pipefitters Union. Among the local projects he worked on include Inland, Georgia Kraft and Krannert Center at Berry College. He later owned and operated Grant's Pak-A-Sak on the Kingston Road and enjoyed making porcelain dolls. During WW II, he served in with the U.S. Army, in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre of operations. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Doyal and Bobby Grant and by a sister, Avalee Sims. On January 31, 1937, he was married to Johnnie Gertrude Ingle and she preceded him in death November 27, 1974. On February 23, 1976, he was married to Ruth Reed Shedd who survives, along with one daughter and son in law, Patricia (Pat) and Allen Bennett of Rome, GA, five step daughters and sons in law, Devonne and Dean Harloff, of Sarasota, FL, Vickie and Rev. Donnie Chandler of Douglasville, GA, Annette and Gary Wright, Rome, GA, Darilene and Frank Coker of Rome, GA, Melody and Dennis Ingram of Lindale, GA, one grandson Tim Bennett, 10 step-grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren.Funeral and interment services will be held 2 pm Monday, September 13, 2004, from the graveside of East View Cemetery with Rev. Donnie Chandler, Pastor of Clearview Baptist Church of Douglasville, GA officiating. Those attending are asked to meet at the Jennings Heritage Chapel by 1:30 PM Monday.The body will remain at the Heritage Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Sunday from 7-9 pm and at other hours they will be at their respective homes.Pallbearers serving are asked to meet at the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home at 1:30PM Monday, and include; Gary Wright, Caldwell Canada, Danny Thompson, Raymond Hall, Dennis Ingram, and G.A.
