Mr. John Lester �Buster� McGinnis, Jr, age 81, of Rome, GA died Friday, January 7, 2011 at his residence.
Mr. McGinnis was born on August 16, 1929 in Rome, GA son of the late John Lester McGinnis, Sr and Mamie Millican McGinnis. Mr. McGinnis attended Rome Boy�s High School. He followed his father and grandfather in the masonry profession, having worked on many of Rome�s business buildings and residences. Mr. McGinnis served as treasurer for the Rome local Brickmason Union for many years and also business agent and held offices in the State affiliations of the union. After retiring as a brickmason Mr. McGinnis was for several years at Wal-Mart and worked also as a courtesy driver for Heritage-GMC- Buick. Mr. McGinnis was an avid golfer, playing on local and as well as state courses winning several trophys. He also volunteered as a driver along with other duties at the Baptist Association for a number of years. Mr. McGinnis was a member of the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church where he was a member of the Gary Cordle Sunday School Class and a former member of the choir. His pride and joy was his great-grandson, Justice A. McGinnis. In addition to his parents Mr. McGinnis was preceded in death by a brother, Charles McGinnis and a sister, Martha Johnston.
Survivors include his wife Jeanette Bennett McGinnis, to whom he was married, January 17, 1947; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Linda McGinnis; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Ben Deleski all of Rome, GA; grandchildren, Matthew Steven McGinnis and Cecilia Hope McGinnis and his great-grandson, Justice McGinnis, brothers, James McGinnis of Rome, GA and Marvin McGinnis of Leesburg, Fl; sisters, Miriam Wilkey, Virginia Reeps and Nancy Sims all of Rome, GA.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel with Dr. Gil Watson officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. at the Oaknoll Chapel.
Pallbearers are asked to meet Sunday by 2:30 P.M. at the Oaknoll Chapel and include the following gentlemen: Don Johnston, Wayne Wilkey, David Reeps, Eddie Sims, John McGinnis, Kenneth McGinnis and Matthew McGinnis.
