Mr. Summerville was born in Cherokee County, AL on June 21, 1918, the son of the late Lucky and Maebelle Weaver Summerville. He was a veteran in the United States Army during World War II serving as a staff sergeant. He also received a bronze star. Prior to retirement Mr. Summerville was associated with Lockheed for over 30 years. Mr. Summerville was a member of the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion and attended Mount Calvary Freewill Baptist Church. He was a very devoted family man and enjoyed flowers. In addition to his parents, Mr. Summerville is preceded in death by, two sisters, Grace Hutchins and Annie Ruth Cone; and one brother, William Russell Summerville.Mr. Summerville is survived by his wife, Melba Haynes Summerville of Rome, GA, to whom he was married on August 1, 1941; two sons and daughter-in-law, Joe Summerville, Jr. of Rome, GA and William Terry and Margaret of Rome, GA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and William (Ed) Mitchell of Silver Creek, GA, Sherry and Robert Mitchell of Rome, GA; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchidren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services will be held Monday, October 24, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Pastor Jackie Culberson and J. Parnick Jennings, Sr. officiating.
