Henry Lee Sneed, 72, of Emerson passed away Saturday at his home in the loving care of his family and friends.
Lee was born in 1940 in Atlanta to the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Alfred Sneed, Jr. and was raised in East Point, GA by his loving grandparents, the late Henry Alfred, Sr. and Belle Sneed. It was in these formative years that Lee's lifetime of service to others was begun. At an early age, he joined the Boy Scouts of America whose teachings laid the foundation of his commitment to "God and country". After obtaining Eagle Scout as a young man and graduation from Headland High School in East Point, Lee joined the United States Air Force where he served as an electronics technician from 1960-1964. It was during this period that Lee and Madge began a lifetime marriage of nearly 51 years. He and Madge resided together in Emerson for 49 years in a home whose "Welcome" mat is now threadbare.
Lee served in many facets of the community and church. He retired in 2002 from Shaw Industries after careers with Lockheed, Chemical Products, and the Bartow County School System. Continuing his lifetime of service, Lee was a member of Emerson Baptist Church having acted as Deacon and as a Sunday school teacher over his lifetime. As an elder of the church, he was admired by many for his devotion and knowledge of the scripture, and by the numerous young lives he influenced as a positive and loving role model. In recent years, Lee also was a member of the City Council of Emerson and a volunteer on the Zoning and Planning committee until his demise. However, his legacy is best measured by his family that he dearly loved and the legions of friends and acquaintances that he made. His oft-repeated jokes and quips will be some of our fondest memories.
Survivors include his wife, Madge Popham Sneed; his sons, Terry Sneed (Clarissa) of St. Louis, Missouri and Michael Sneed (Ashley) of Greenville, South Carolina; his daughter, Pam Sneed Patterson (Greg) of Cartersville; his grandchildren, Drew Patterson, Luke Patterson and April Sneed Blackmon (Shawn); his great-grandchild, Bentlie Sneed; step-grandchildren, Cody and John Pease; his brother-in-law, Bill Popham (Amy) of Emerson; and his niece and nephew, Erin and Craig Popham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Emerson First Baptist Church with Dr. Greg Potts and Greg Patterson officiating. The body will lie in state from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Emerson Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home.
