Lerney Gipson

Mr. Lerney (Hoot) Gipson, Jr., age 87, of 222 Harrison Road, Rome, GA, died Sunday morning February 17, 2008, in his residence.

Mr. Gipson was born on December 21, 1920, in Lakemont, GA, son of the late Lerney Gipson, Sr. and Lola Beard Gipson. He was an Armed Services veteran who served in World War II. Mr. Gipson was employed with Georgia Power for forty years and retired in 1982. He was an avid golfer and he and his wife enjoyed playing together for many years. In his younger years Mr. Gipson enjoyed bird hunting and boating. He was a member of the West Rome United Methodist Church. Mr. Gipson was preceded by three brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Gipson is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janelle Whitton Gipson of Rome, to whom he married on November 29, 1941; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Joan Gipson of Opelika, AL; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy and Steve Shaws and Janet Pilcher both of Silver Creek, GA; two grandsons, Dr. Scott Holder and Joe Gipson; three granddaughters, Krista Barton, Angela Carey and Amy Pilcher and a brother, Fred Gipson of Lakemont, GA.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at 11:00 AM in the Oaknoll Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Les Connell officiating. Interment will follow at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends this (Monday) evening from 6 until 8 PM in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home. At other hours the family will be at their home.
