On October 26, 2024, Lewis Fredrick Starkebaum went to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior.
Born on December 20, 1933, in Yates Center, Kansas, he was the son of the late Arthur Fredrick and the late Caroline Pantle Starkebaum. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Mildred Youkin, Donna Beckmon, Ethel Peterson, Raymond, Harold, John, and Kenneth Starkebaum; and granddaughter, Brandi Holcomb.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mildred Massey Starkebaum; daughters, Linda Holcomb and Lisa (Scott) Sanford; grandchildren, Chris (Nancy) Holcomb, Caroline (Ricardo) Lamberti, Jonathan Sanford, and Madison Sanford; great grandchildren, Hendrix and Gannon Holcomb, McKenna, McKenzie, and Magnolia Lamberti; sister, Lucille Logan; brother, Ralph Starkebaum; and many nieces and nephews.
Lewis attended and graduated from Yates Center School in Kansas. He then entered the Navy from 1952-1956. He was stationed in Virginia and on the USS Beetlegoose Ship.
After leaving the Navy, he married and moved to Cartersville, Georgia. He went to work with Georgia Department of Transportation where he worked until he became employed by US Corp of Engineers at Lake Allatoona. He retired after 30 years service. He later went back to work with the maintenance group and worked until the age of 84.
Lewis was a loving, caring husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, and uncle. Lewis was always willing to help his neighbors whether it was killing hogs, fixing well pumps, plowing gardens or mowing lawns for numerous widow women in Cartersville and Bartow County.
Lewis was a member of the Baptist faith at Center Baptist Church, and in his younger years taught adult Sunday School class and was Song Leader for a short period of time.
Lewis loved his family, kids, grandkids, and great grandkids from the youngest to the oldest. When the grandkids were young, he would get down on the floor and play with them. When his granddaughter Brandi was born with many handicaps, he was a very active part of her growing up and helping take care of her. He went to soccer games, softball games, baseball games, band concerts, bowling games, and graduations of as many kids and grandkids as possible. Paw Paw was the best to all who knew him. Lewis also had a huge garden with his father-in-law and then later on his own garden; he loved to plant it and watch it grow. He also loved canning along with his wife and girls. He gave away lots of vegetables to neighbors, coworkers, and friends. Lewis will be missed by many.
A special thanks to his doctors, Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Bevil, for taking care of him for many years.
