Mr. Lonnie Gray Shamblin, Jr., of 29 Camelia Road (Hermitage Heights Community), Rome, GA, passed away Friday, June 23, 2006, with his family by his side.A native of Rome and Floyd County, Mr. Shamblin was born on August 8, 1932, the son of the late Lonnie Gray Shamblin, Sr. and Nora Davis Shamblin. Prior to retirement he was associated with Galey and Lord for a number of years. Mr. Shamblin was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the United States Army. He was an active member of the New Antioch Baptist Church, where he was instrumental in building the current sanctuary. For over 50 years Mr. Shamblin had served in different capacities in the church including Sunday School Superintendent, deacon, training director, brotherhood and sang in the Adult Choir. He loved his family and was always involved in his daughter's and granddaughters' activities. He also enjoyed camping and woodworking. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shamblin was also preceded in death by four sisters, Madelle Spears, Viola Carney, Jewel Stanley and Mary Nell Hamilton and his mother-in-law, Faye Dyer.Mr. Shamblin is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Marlene Dyer Shamblin, to whom he was married on December 23, 1955; one daughter, Laura Gray Carney of Armuchee, GA; two granddaughters, Annie Elizabeth Carney and Katherine "Kate" Gray Carney; one sister, Kathleen Shamblin of Shannon.Funeral services for Mr. Shamblin will be held Monday morning, June 26, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the New Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Cargle and Rev. Max Tucker officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Rev. Clinton Carver in charge of graveside rites. Mr. Shamblin will be carried to the church on Monday to lay in-state from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.Mr. Shamblin will lay in-state in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends this (Sunday) evening from 6 until 9 PM.Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church on Monday by 10:30 a.m. and include John Minshew, Ranford Wright, J.W. King, Gene Bowman, Jack Culbertson, Fred Bynum, Glen Davis and Bill Worley. Honorary pallbearers will include past and present deacons of New Antioch Baptist Church and members of the Victor Sunday School Class.Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the New Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O.
