Mrs. Mary Jo Smith, age 79, of 10 Bert Road, Rome, GA, died Friday, November 10, 2006, in a local hospital.Mrs. Smith was born in Chattooga County, GA, on March 28, 1927, the daughter of the late Elbert Cleveland Hardin and Lottie Dutton Hardin. She had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County for the greater part of her life and was a member of the Mount Calvary Freewill Baptist Church. Prior to retirement in 1980, Mrs. Smith had been associated with Integrated Products for a number of years. In her early years she worked at the Coffee Cup on Broad Street in downtown Rome. Mrs. Smith enjoyed watching soap operas and was an avid reader of her Bible. She loved spending time with her grandchildren to whom she was affectionately known as "Nanny Jo". In addition to her parents Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Henry Smith, on August 26, 2002, to whom she was married on February 18, 1946. A granddaughter, Darla Welborn, and three brothers, Edward, Wilson and Robert "R.C." Hardin, also preceded her in death.Mrs. Smith is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Bobby Justice of Rome, Bonnie and Leon Stanley of Rome, Cathy and David Elliott of Atlanta, Janie and Sam Sullins of Rome, and Tammy and John Walters of Rome; one brother, Tommy Hardin of Rome. Twelve grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren also survive. Her first great-great-granddaughter is due in March of 2007.Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Oaknoll Chapel fo the Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Jackie Culberson and Dr. E.C. Chatham officiating.
