Mrs. Mary Frances Tanner, age 71, of 205 East 18th Street, Rome, GA, died Saturday morning, May 29, 2004, following a lengthy illness.A native of Rome and Floyd County, Mrs. Tanner was born on April 24, 1933, the daughter of Frances Eddie Lee Goddard Bennett and the late Buddy Wicker "Doc" Bennett. She had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County all her life and was a housewife and homemaker. Mrs. Tanner was a member of the West Rome Church of God where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and was active in a variety of functions at the church. She was a devoted Christian, always helping others, sacrificing of herself to give to others, and had a keen sense of humor. Mrs. Tanner was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved shopping, working with her hands, Gospel music and was an excellent cook.Mrs. Tanner is survived by her husband, Lee Edward "Hoot" Tanner, to whom she was married on April 30, 1951; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Marie and Calvin Towe of Silver Creek, GA; three sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Debbie Sue Tanner of Rome, Rev. Jimmy and Karen Tanner of Blairsville, GA, and Buddy Tanner of Rome; seven grandchildren, Lamar Towe, Cynthia Scoggins, Tiffany Gail Hogue, Kristal Lee Smith, Leslee Tanner, Micah Tanner and Candie Tanner; her mother, Frances Eddie Lee Bennett of Rome; two sisters, Joan Graham of Rome and Glenda Nelson of Armuchee, GA; two brothers, Allen Bennett and Jerry Wayne Bennett, both of Rome. Four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services for Mrs. Tanner will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with her son, Rev. Jimmy Tanner, and her Pastor, Rev. Oley Wilson, officiating.
