Mattie Tatum

April 7, 1918 — June 11, 2010

Mrs. Mattie Leah Tatum, 92, of Cartersville passed away peacefully at her home to join her Heavenly Father on Friday, June 11, 2010. Born April 7, 1918 in the Jerusalem community in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Carter Ferris Wilson and the late Lula Belle Bryant Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-two years, Olin Tatum, who passed away May 27, 2001; and three brothers, Glenn Wilson, Ray Wilson, and Robert Wilson.

Mrs. Tatum was a member of Friendship Baptist Church since June 1949. She faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher for thirty years and worked with the Baptist Womens Association. She enjoyed cooking and often entertained in her humble home which endeared her to so many. Mrs. Tatum loved gardening, canning vegetables, and growing flowers. She was a long time member of the Magnolia Garden Club where she enjoyed learning all she could about gardening and enjoyed the many friends she made along the way. Mrs. Tatum loved her family dearly and loved helping others which was evident in her serving as a member of the Cartersville Medical Ladies Auxiliary for twenty years. After her employment with EZ Mills, Mrs. Tatum also worked with Dunaway Drugs and with Young Brothers Pharmacy.

Mattie Leah leaves to cherish her memory her loving children and their spouses, Brenda Bearden, Joyce and Dean Cox, Nancy and Charles Law, and William and Karen Tatum, all of Cartersville. She was also blessed with four grandchildren and their spouses, Brian and Lisa Bearden, Brett and Amanda Davis, Leigh Lockwood, and Calen Casey. Lovingly referring to her as Mamaw, she also leaves five precious great-grandchildren, Bailey, Chloe, Blane, Brady, and Carson.

Mrs. Tatum was the second child in a close and devoted family of thirteen children. Her surviving brothers and sisters and their spouses include Colleen Allred, Ethel Monroe, Hillard and Jean Wilson, Senate and Dottie Wilson, Sue and Wesley Lipscomb, Frances and Jimmy Bingham, Betty and Ron Richards, Billy and Claudine Wilson, and Carol and Clarence Brown, all of Cartersville. Survivors also include a number of nieces and nephews and a special caregiver of six years, Colleen Campbell.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend and will be missed by all who knew her. She was a true representative of Americas Greatest Generation who was full of grace, charm, and hard work; wasted nothing; and led a life of service.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2010 at Friendship Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Duvall, Pastor Billy Wilson, and Dr. Eric Mathison officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
