Miller Eugene (Gene) Evans, 72, of Cartersville went home to with the Lord on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. Born August 8, 1937, he was the son of the late Miller Evans and the late Irma K. Lance Evans.
Gene never met a stranger and always greeted people with a smile. He will be remembered most for his love of racing. Gene grew up drag racing and building race cars. He owned his first drag racer when he was 15 years old. Gene also owned a Grand National Race Car during the 1960�s. After his retirement from a successful career with Capitol Cadillac in Atlanta, Gene started his "second career" in funeral service with H.M. Patterson and Son in Atlanta. With his return to Cartersville, Gene joined the staff of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
Gene was a 1956 graduate of Cartersville High School. In the early 1960�s he entered the Army and served his military career in Army Intelligence at the Pentagon. Gene received an accommodation from President John Kennedy for discovering a security breach in the oval office.
Gene was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was a member of Johnny Womack�s Sunday school class. Prior to his return to Cartersville, he was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta and was a member of Kirby Pruitt�s Sunday school class.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Bobbie Edwards Evans; his daughters and sons-in-law, DeeDee and Frank Langston of Cartersville and Dana and Damon Pla of Delaware; his grandchildren, Collin Cobb, Max Langston, Maya Pla, and soon-to-be-born Zoey; his sister, Mary Francis Clark of Cartersville; his sister-in-law and her husband, Bettie and Myron Ramsey of Macon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Richard Brown and Johnny Womack officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 5 � 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 � 3 p.m. Thursday at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 430 Cassville Rd., Cartersville, GA 30120.
The family will accept flowers, or memorial contributions may be made to WellStar Community Hospice or to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Preschool Ministry.
