Pastor Hazel

November 10, 1932 — April 15, 2010

Pastor Edward Donald Hazel, Sr., 77, after living a full life of service went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the Cartersville Medical Center. Born November 10, 1932 in LaGrange, Georgia, he was the son of the late Marshall Hazel and the late Blanche Freeman. He was also preceded in death his grandson, Christopher Hazel, and his brother, Lavaughn Hazel.



Don answered the call to the ministry while serving in the United States Air Force stationed in Chateauroux, France. He left military service to attend Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee where he pastored his first church, Center Point Baptist Church of Springfield. After graduation he moved to Franklin, Georgia where he became pastor of Franklin Baptist Church. Don then decided to attend New Orleans Theological Seminary to further his education and to earn his Master of Divinity degree.



After seminary Don moved back to Georgia to begin his life long journey pastoring churches in the surrounding areas beginning with Roopville Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Villa Rica, Unity Baptist Church, Fellowship Baptist Church, and Greenacres Baptist Church. Don left the pastoral ministry to become Director of Missions where he coordinated work for thirty-four churches and started three missions. After serving in this capacity for fifteen years, he was called to Kingston Baptist Church where he served as pastor for ten years. He was also very active with the Georgia Baptist Convention where he taught for over fifty-two years.



Don currently served as the Chaplain for three assisted living homes: Autumn Years, Star Manor, and Felton Manor. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially Kroger and Ingles where he went daily to just talk and look for bargains.



Survivors include his wife of 57� years, Margaret Ann Lee Hazel of Cartersville; three sons, Edward D. Hazel, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Courtland, New York, Randall Hazel of Cartersville, and Dwayne Hazel of Cartersville and Rebecca Wilson of Cummings; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Josh Clayton of Mounds, Minnesota, Jessica Hazel of Courtland, New York, Ashley Hazel of Yantai, China, and Daniel and Amanda Hazel of Cartersville.



A celebration of Don's life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Friendship Baptist Church. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.



Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Willard, John Morgan, E. H. Bush, Robert Adams, James Black, and Gary Smith. The residents and staff of Autumn Years, Star Manor, and Felton Manor are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.



The family will receive friends from 6 � 8 p.m. Saturday at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 430 Cassville Rd., Cartersville, GA 30120.
