Mr. Richard (Whitey) Barnes, Jr. age 84, of Oreburg Road Rome, GA, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Barnes was born in Escambia, Al. on July 25, 1924, the son of the late Richard Barnes Sr. and Alyene Murphy Barnes. He served in the United States Army and served his country in the single biggest and bloodiest battle in U.S. history �The battler of the bulge�. Mr. Barnes received The American Theater Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church for 38 years. Mr. Barnes Retried from Inland Container in 1989 after 38 years of service and he enjoyed fishing and gardening and spending time with his family. Mr. Barnes was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a brother Wendell Barnes, two brothers-in-law; John D. Reeves and Edmond Frankly.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years to whom he was married on February 22, 1953 Mrs. Lola Edwards Barnes of Rome, GA.;one son and his wife Lee and LeGressa Barnes of Rome, GA. ;one daughter and her husband Bonnie and Kenneth Hobbs of Rome, GA. ;six grandchildren Perry, Cody, Jamey Barnes all of Rome, GA. Brad, Kassidy and Lane Hobbs all of Rome, GA. ;two brothers and sisters-in-law Bobby and Barbara Barnes of Orange Beach AL. Harold and Mary Barnes of Blue Ridges, GA.; four sister and brothers-in-law Kathleen Reeves of Pace, FL. Joan and Homer Nix of Atmore, AL., Peggy and Hillary Grice Theodore, AL., Ila merle Franklin Pensacola FL.
Funeral services will be held today, April 21, 2009, at 4:00 P.M. at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist church Rev. Michael Holt and Frank Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery with the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends today from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at the Mt. Pleasant Methodist church.
The grandchildren have been asked to serve as pallbearers and are requested to meet at the church today by 1:00 P.M. Honorary pallbearers are all retirees from Inland Container Corp.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be made to the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4013 Alabama Road, Rome, GA 30165.
