Mr. Robert C. (Shorty) Mathis, age 73, of 5143 Highway 156, S.W., Calhoun, Georgia passed away on Monday, August 28, 2006 at a Gordon County hospital.
Mr. Mathis was born on September 17, 1932 in Chattooga County, Georgia, the son of the late Wiley Ross Mathis and Grace Owens Mathis. He had lived most of his life in Rome, Tennessee and Calhoun and was a member of the Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Mathis served in the U.S. Navy for twenty two and half years during the Korean War and the Viet Nam Era, retiring as a chief petty officer. Following the service, he worked for seven years as a printer for Braselton- Wallace Printing Company and from 1992-1996, Mr. Mathis served as a security guard at Family Leisure Resort in Adairsville. He was preceded in death by his father, Wiley Ross Mathis on April 25, 1961 and his mother, Grace Owens Mathis on August 5, 2000. Also preceding him in death was his brother, John W. Mathis in 1977.
Survivors include his wife Bertha Carter Mathis, to whom he was married November 30, 1954; six sons and daughters in-law, David and Kathy Mathis of Chatsworth, Larry and Unique Mathis of Marietta, George and Connie Mathis of Mobile, AL, Keith Mathis of Calhoun, James and Alicia Mathis of Grand Bay, AL and Curtis Wright of Rome; one brother and sister in-law, Weyman and Ellen Mathis of Rome; one sister and brother in-law, Elizabeth and Charles Grigsby of Rome; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Mathis will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday at the Oaknoll Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with Mr. J. Parnick Jennings, Sr. and Rev. George Adams officiating. Interment will follow at Gordon Memorial Gardens in Calhoun.
The family will receive friends at the Oaknoll Chapel tonight (Wednesday) from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home by10:30 am Thursday and include, Travis Jackson, Scotty Parker, Davis Brooks, Tim Bramblett and Charles Underhill.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Disabled Veterans Life Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 96295, Washington, D.C. 20090-6295.
