Mrs. Ruby Parker Humphries, age 84, of 6 Three Mile Road, Rome, GA, died Monday, June 14, 2004, following a long illness.Mrs. Humphries was born in the Blackwood Springs community of Gordon County, GA, on October 20, 1919, the daughter of the late Samuel Taylor Parker and Minnie Legg Parker. While growing up she assisted in the total operation of her disabled father's grocery store. After graduation from Calhoun High School, she wrote for the Calhoun Newspaper and worked as an agent for the Greyhound Bus Lines in Calhoun and Rome. Mrs. Humphries completed an accounting course at Rome Business School, attended Mercer Off-Campus in Rome and later graduated from Mercer University in Macon, GA. She served as a volunteer for Congressman Buddy Darden and was TV Host for the Senior Showcase on the Rome/Floyd Library Channel. Mrs. Humphries assisted in the organization of Garden Lakes Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as President of the Senior's Program. At the time of her death she was a member of the West Rome Baptist Church.. While living in a nursing home, Mrs. Humphries won the title of Ms. Floyd Health Care and placed Runner-Up in the Annual Ms. Georgia Nursing Home Pageant in 1995. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Otis, Guy and Leroy Parker.Mrs. Humphries is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Linda Parker Houcouras, Donna Parker Wilson, Guy Parker, Jr., Eddie L. Parker, Edward Parker, Charles Parker and Jimmy Parker. A number of great and great-great nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services for Mrs. Humphries will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Mr. J. Parnick Jennings, Sr. officiating.
