Retired 1st Sargent Samuel L. Butler, 73, of Cartersville, died Thursday, August 06, 2015, at his residence. A native of Bartow County, born August 25, 1941, he was the son of the late Charles Butler and Elizabeth Sullins Butler.
Mr. Butler is a veteran, having served in the United States Army, retiring with 21 years of service. During his service time he earned the National Defense Service Medal ,the Vietnam Service Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), the Bronze Star Medal, the Army commendation Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identifications Badge, the Legion of Merit Medal and a Purple Heart. Following his retirement from the Army, he went to work with the Bartow County Sherriff's Department, where he retired again with 20 years. He was also a member of the Cartersville Lodge #63 F&AM. Sam was a very loving and giving person and never met a stranger.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Fran Kennedy Butler of Cartersville; his daughters and sons-in-law, Teneia and Troy Glenn of Woodstock, Tammy and Randall Day of Cartersville, Dede and Mark Florence of Dallas, Ann Marie and Daniel Vollmar of Cumming; his sons and daughters-in-law, Lynn Butler of Smyrna, Lee Butler of Woodstock, Kevin and Amanda Butler of Cartersville and Joseph Chapman of Massachusetts; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and two God children, Tara Rose and Jay Butler; his sister, Patsy Barrett of Cartersville; his sister-in-law, Martha Ann Butler; and his brother-in-law, Paul Barrett.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Graceland Campus of The Church at Liberty Square with Pastor Chuck Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens with full Military Honors and Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services from 5 -8 p.m. on Saturday.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Pressley, Jimmy Landrum, Rick Luense, Randy Stewart, J.L. Duncan and Warren Hunt. The members of the Bartow County Sherriff's office will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Bartow and Cobb County Animal Control.
