Sarah Munn

June 3, 1926 — August 23, 2012

Sarah Enloe Munn (June 3, 1926- August 23, 2012) spent her life serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her family, her community and the hundreds of Special Education children she would teach. She often reminded people, "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!" Her life was one filled with joy and gladness.

Sarah was born in Atlanta, GA and graduated from Maryville College in 1947 with a degree in Home Economics and a minor in Bible and Religious Education. She called Cartersville home for sixty-three years, having moved there from Atlanta to become the director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church. This move proved priceless, because it was where she met and married the love of her life, Al Munn in 1948. She spent 17 wonderful years raising their six children. Because of her strong desire for Rey, her son with Down's syndrome, to attend public school, she decided to teach the class herself. This propelled her toward a 23-year career of teaching special education until her retirement in 1988. Rey's life also inspired Sarah and Al to assist in establishing Hickory Log Vocational School, a home for developmentally disabled men in Cartersville. She left Cartersville in 2010 to live near her oldest daughter at Shannondale of Maryville, TN.

Sarah was named for her grandmother, Sarah Granger Hansell, daughter of A.O. Granger, who joined the Cartersville Presbyterian Church in 1893. Her parents Van Porter Enloe and Caroline Hansell Enloe raised Sarah and her two siblings, Hansell and Nannette, in Atlanta.

Sarah and Al were proud of their children, each of whom learned from their parents the importance of making a contribution to their own communities: Caroline Munn Best of Maryville, TN; Rey Munn, deceased; Van Porter Munn, of Cumming, GA; Kay Munn Smith, recently moved to Denver, CO.; Nannette Munn Howard, currently residing in Sahiwal, Pakistan; and Irene Munn Jacobsen, of Atlanta, GA. Sarah has 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sarah served in the First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville as an Elder, Moderator of the Presbyterian Women, Bible study leader and Vacation Bible School Director. She was also involved with Girl Scouts for 35 years, including leading a troop of special education girls. Sarah received many honors for her contributions to the community including Woman in History by the GA Federation of Business and Professional Women's Club in 2008, Woman of the Year, Mother of the Year, Woman of Achievement AARP Service Award, and Bartow-Cartersville Retired Educators Community Service Award.

Today, we rejoice in the knowledge that she has completed her work here on earth and is forever at home with the Savior she faithfully served for 86 years. A memorial service will be at First Presbyterian Church in Cartersville, GA at 11 am on Wednesday, August 29th. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Hickory Log Vocational School, (P.O. 300, White, GA 30184) which held a very special place in Sarah's heart.
