Mr. Stanley G. Payne, age 60, of 2 Pembroke Place, Rome, GA, died Tuesday September 28, 2004 at Floyd Medical Center following a sudden heart attack suffered earlier at his residence.Stanley was born in Floyd County, September 21, 1944, son of the late Arthur Carol and Katherine Laura Allen Payne and had spent his entire life in Rome and Floyd County. He was a member of the North Rome Church of God, a member of the Church Council, served as chairperson of the Church's Covenant to Care Campaign and was chairman of the Greeters. He had been associated with Floyd Medical Center for over 40 years and at the time of his death he was Director of Emergency Medical Services and had served in that position for several years.Stanley Payne and EMS have been synonymous both locally and on the state level. He began his career in 1963, as an ambulance attendant and an assistant Funeral Director with the Jennings Funeral Home. When the local funeral homes ceased operating ambulances in 1966, Stanley became associated with FMC. He was considered, in the ranks of EMS, as a pioneer in EMS in the entire state of Georgia. He worked diligently to bring Advance Life Support systems to Floyd Medical Center and was very innovative in many aspects of EMS from the building of ambulances to the supplies that they stored onboard each one. Under his guidance, Floyd Medical Center's EMS has been named Georgia's EMS Service of the year an unprecedented three times. He was also recognized by his peers as EMS Director of the year for Northwest Georgia's EMS Region One and the EMS Director of the Year for the State of Georgia.Stanley was a member of the Oostanaula Masonic Lodge 113 F&AM, was a Scottish Rite Mason and a long time member and Past President of the Rome Shrine Club and the Yaarab Temple in Atlanta. He was a member of the State EMS Advisory Council, a former EMT instructor. He had also served in the Georgia National Guard. He was a member of the East Rome Gideon Camp where he served as Vice President, he served as a Deputy Coroner of Floyd County and had been named Deputy Coroner of the Year by the Georgia Coroner's Association. Survivors include, his wife, the former Betty Jo Wilson, to whom he was married December 19, 1964, two daughters and son in law, Dedie and Stephen Padgett of Marietta, GA and April Johanna Nichols of Cartersville, GA a son Rick Payne of Jacksonville, AL, his mother in law, Edith Langston Wilson of Shannon, GA, sisters and brothers in law, Edie and Randy Lloyd or Rome, GA, Carol and Gary Gore of Summerville, SC, and Chipper and Cindy Wilson of Shannon, GA several nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services for Stanley G. Payne will be held at 3pm Friday October 1, 2004, at the North Rome Church of God with Rev. Harold Jones, Rev. Bert Brooks and Rev. Kevin Lloyd officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Mr. Payne will be taken to the North Rome Church of God where the family will receive friends Thursday from 6-9PM and will be placed instate at the Church Friday at 1PM to remain until time for services.Active Pallbearers serving include; Rick Payne, Tony Cooper, Danny Hall, Wayne Johnson, Stephen Phillips, Larry Alford, David Young and Larry Kimbrell.
